Inverloddon has been in the same family for the last 150 years.
Recently it has benefitted from some gentle renovations, sympathetic to its Victorian origins.
As you would expect, due to its age and position in the village, it has some interesting local and International history.
The origins of the Wargrave and Shiplake Regatta began between the families at ‘Inverloddon’ and ‘Wargrave Hall’ next door, indulging in feudal river games during the Summer months leading to a Regatta enjoyed by the whole village and still expanding every year.
Indeed, many locals will remember coming to the garden at ‘Inverloddon’ in the 1980’s to practise (and picnic on the lawn) for the Regatta prior to it moving to the Wargrave Boat Club as the number of competitors grew. The Regatta is still intensely competitive and is an event enjoyed by the very young to the not so very young, people coming back to compete year after year, sometimes from great distances.
With an International flavour, John Hermon was interested in the new band of Polar Explorers at the turn of the 1900’s, indeed he is alleged to have sponsored one of the first trips to the Antarctic by Ernest Shackleton. There is anecdotal evidence that Ernest Shackleton was present at a dinner at ‘Inverloddon’ (or Wargrave Hall) not long before he embarked on one of the Expeditions.
It is a popular place to stay for the events that highlight the summer in the area. The Henley Regatta, Henley Festival, Rewind Festival and the Wargrave and Shiplake Regatta follow in quick succession. Quite often the guests are previous rowers who stayed to compete in the Regattas and are delighted to find out it is now a B&B and return as parents or to enjoy one of the river events without the strain of competition. Several people from the USA have done the ‘trip back in time’…
Its particularly beautiful at sunset and guests can enjoy these views relaxing with a sundowner on the riverside deck.
